The words Benjamin Franklin proposed for the seal of the United States.
I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. […] It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government. - Thomas Jefferson
Equality, rightly understood as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences; wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism.
Democracy extends the sphere of individual freedom, socialism restricts it. Democracy attaches all possible value to each man; socialism makes each man a mere agent, a mere number. Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one world: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint an servitude.
Those who seek absolute power, even though they seek it to do what they regard as good, are simply demanding the right to enforce their own version of heaven on earth. And let me remind you, they are the very ones who always create the most hellish tyrannies. Absolute power does corrupt, and those who seek it must be suspect and must be opposed. Their mistaken course stems from false notions of equality, ladies and gentlemen. Equality, rightly understood, as our founding fathers understood it, leads to liberty and to the emancipation of creative differences. Wrongly understood, as it has been so tragically in our time, it leads first to conformity and then to despotism.
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis
Deputies shoot, kill man after knocking on wrong door
Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies shot and killed a man they assumed was an attempted murder suspect on Sunday, but they now know they shot the wrong man.
In the early morning hours, deputies knocked on 26-year-old Andrew Lee Scott’s door without identifying themselves as law enforcement officers. Scott answered the door with a gun in his hand.
"When we knocked on the door, the door opened and the occupant of that apartment was pointing a gun at deputies and that’s when we opened fire and killed him," Lt. John Herrell said.
Deputies thought they were confronting Jonathan Brown, a man accused of attempted murder. Brown was spotted at the Blueberry Hills Apartment complex and his motorcycle was parked across from Andrew Scott’s front door.
Ok, those deputies know damn well that if you knock on someone’s door at 1:30 in the morning, chances are the person is going to think it is someone who shouldn’t be there.
I’m willing to bet most of these officers would have done the same thing if someone started banging on their door in the middle of the night.
So not only were they at the wrong house (which doesn’t surprise me, what can you expect from the police?) but they shot a man who was simply armed and afraid because some asshole was knocking on his door at an unreasonable hour. I myself would have thought it was a mugger.
They claimed they did not announce themselves for “tactical advantage.” That is bullshit. They killed a man because of this “tactical advantage.”
It is clear the function of police is no longer to protect and serve, but to kill and oppress.
